Let me just begin by saying: I suck donkey balls at any game by From Software. I’m absolute trash and there is, quite possibly, no redemption for me. Now that that’s out of the way, the newest game by From Software is a challenging affair. This game will beat you, brutalize you, make you bleed and cry and scream at you to never return… but you come back. You want too. No matter how much it pains you, you want see it to the end. Or you don’t, that’s what happened to me. I’ve played Dark Souls, Dark Souls II, and Bloodborne, all of which actively pushed me away. There’s too much of a spike in difficulty for me, and while I understand that the games are “fair” it still manages to feel cheap and unrewarding.
This isn’t the case with Dark Souls III.
I don’t know what it is, but this time it works. The game is clicking with me in ways that no other Souls game has. The combat feels fluid and exciting. Right now I’m playing through the game as a Sword and Shield warrior. I’ve sunk more than 5 hours into this game but I really think there’s something to this game that wasn’t here before. I’ve never really cared about the story in a Dark Souls game. it’s just a little too hidden for me, requiring me to read item descriptions and the likes is just a bit to jagged for me. The story can be hidden subtly, that doesn’t means it just needs to be hidden flat out.
Gameplay wise, Dark Souls is still silky smooth and tense. It’s a fighting experience unlike any I’ve ever played. One wrong swing and you’re getting jabbed by zombie fools with their spikes and swords. This game is undoubtedly unique and while I acknowledge that it isn’t my favorite game of all time, its still a damn good bit of fun. This is a high quality action rpg with great combat, absolutely stunning enviroments and art design, and killer sound design. This is a high quality game for sure.
While I don’t feel that my experience with this game will be the same with everyone, this game has definitely changed my opinion on the Souls series. I won’t be going back to any of the older games but I can appreciate them more now then I could’ve before. If you don’t like the Souls series, this game may or may not change your opinion on it. I know it did for me.
